Ansilta Range,
located within the Argentinean Province of San Juan, consists of a string
of seven peaks exceeding 5000m, Ansilta I – VII, the highest being
Ansilta II at 5,890m. The Ansilta is
infrequently visited, with several of the peaks holding as few as two
known ascents.
The Ansilta Range presents a climbing destination of wild and gorgeous
scenery, with relatively short and easy access. The access routes to the
Ansilta range are via the Rio Ansilta upon the Cordillera’s Northeast
for peaks I & II, and via Los Morrillos Nature Reserve for peaks III, IV
& V, and the remaining peaks VI and VII via the Arroyo Casa de Piedra. In
all cases access to the trailheads requires transfer by 4WD and
arrangement of the necessary permits from land owners.
General speaking, the technical difficulties of these routes can be
considered as moderate to easy even though some routes are through
glaciers and/or couloirs, the snow conditions are usually good and the
exposure low. Due to its location, Ansilta is fortunate enough to
experience relatively good weather throughout the year, in fact most of
the peaks have been climbed during the Andean winter!
